Dumbbells & High Heels was created by Laura Jackson; a Toronto-based journalist, figure competitor, personal trainer and nutrition expert.
She launched this unique magazine concept as a way to empower women to become the best version of themselves.
At its core, Laura believes Dumbbells & High Heels represents a new era of women: strong, brilliant, independent and wise beyond belief; yet feminine, spiritual, vulnerable, authentic and passionate about life.
Although the name “Dumbbells & High Heels” may seem like a contradiction, Laura says it
Through her own transformation and weight loss journey, she felt strong and beautiful.
empowering it was to feel both strong and beautiful from the inside out.
We believe it’s important to add some Yin to your Yang, or in other words, some peanut butter to your jelly sandwich (if you know what we mean!) Although they are nothing alike, they somehow balance each other out.
As a fitness-focused magazine, we strongly encourage you to embrace “the warrior within” as often as possible. Whether it’s lifting weights, running marathons, getting into downward dog, sweating it out on the elliptical or climbing a mountain, we say go for it! Exercise does so much for confidence, mood, energy and self-esteem.
On the other hand, we think it’s totally awesome and completely necessary (for so many reasons) to allow your girly-girl side to shine through — you know, the one who enjoys a bubble bath and a good book after a long day at work; or the one who is all over the latest eye cream on the market and loves to strut around in a pair of heels? Or how about the one who simply enjoys a hot latte and a fresh Pedi after a long day of retail therapy? Whatever your guilty pleasure, we say indulge in it a little and don’t ever apologize — life’s way too short!
We represent women who are ready to authentically step into their power and live their best life.
As an online female empowerment magazine, we take an unconventional approach to fitness, fashion, beauty and wellness. Our idea to launch this unique magazine concept came to us when we noticed a recent trend: wellness, self-care and life experiences are becoming the equivalence of “luxury” for many women.
So what does this mean, exactly? Well, instead of investing in another designer handbag, an expensive face cream or invasive beauty treatments, more and more women are choosing to indulge in the things that make them feel strong, empowered, confident, centered, beautiful, connected and fulfilled on a deeper level.
As we launch into this exciting new era, you’ll likely hear your gal pals dish about their recent experience at Soul Cycle; the best healthy eats in their neighbourhood; a cool meditation app that they downloaded to their Smart Phone; the latest juice cleanse in their life; or an all natural vegan face mask that they happened to stumble upon.
To give you a better idea of what we mean, we believe our ideal reader prefers to spend her weekend in Downward Dog, while catching up with a girlfriend over a Latte (sporting Lululemon or Lorna Jane in place of Louis Vuitton). More than ever, we believe women crave me time, meaningful relationships and the opportunity to connect with their mind, body and soul.
After recognizing the opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and inspire more women to live their best life, we decided to create an online space that provides interesting, informative and well-researched articles on anything from the latest fitness gadgets to the best at home facial cleansing device to the coolest yoga retreats on the planet.
To ensure our content is relevant, newsworthy, timely and factual, we conduct interviews with leading industry experts; cite the latest studies from scientific journals and share anecdotal stories from real-life women. As professional journalists, we believe it’s our job to eliminate the fluff and get straight to the facts.
With so much information and misinformation out there, we know it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Therefore, we do our best to give you content that’s relevant and meaningful to you and your life. Our goal is to leave you feeling empowered, inspired and totally Zen.
In addition to providing interesting and inspiring articles, we also strive to create a sense of community and sisterhood among our readers. We believe it’s important to foster conversations on real-life issues as a way to support and empower one another. When we share our stories and allow ourselves to be open and vulnerable we are better able to see that we are much more alike than not.
Although we know that beauty stems from the inside, we also believe in taking good care of ourselves. As a wellness-inspired magazine, we strongly feel that when we eat well, exercise regularly — and on occasion — trade in our sweats for stilettos, we have the energy, confidence, strength and stamina to accomplish so much more.
We sincerely hope that you enjoy our online publication. If you ever have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact us. We’d love to hear from you!
We’ll admit, we’re obsessed with tracking the latest fashion trends and trying out anything new like an organic juice bar or a ballet-inspired barre class. And we equally love when we discover a life-changing beauty treatment, a recipe for a delicious, gluten-free dessert or an inspiring podcast.
Wishing you an abundance of health & happiness
