Dumbbells & High Heels was created by Laura Jackson; a Toronto-based journalist, figure competitor, personal trainer and nutrition expert. She launched this unique, online magazine concept as a way to empower women to become the best version of themselves.

At its core, Laura believes Dumbbells & High Heels represents a new era of women who aren’t afraid to go after what they want when it comes to living their best life. To sum it up, DBHH represents professional women in their 30s, 40s and 50s who are ready to step into their power.

As an online female empowerment magazine, we take an unconventional approach to fitness, fashion, beauty and wellness. Our idea to launch this unique magazine concept came to us when we noticed a recent trend: wellness is quickly becoming the latest form of luxury among women.

So what does this mean?

Instead of investing in another designer handbag, an expensive face cream or an invasive beauty treatment, women are opting to indulge in the things that make them feel strong, empowered, confident, connected and fulfilled on a deeper level. In a nutshell, they’re prioritizing fulfilling life experiencing over everything else.

As we launch into this exciting new era, you’ll likely hear your gal pals dish about their recent experience at Soul Cycle; the best healthy eats in their neighbourhood; a cool meditation app that they downloaded to their Smart Phone; the latest juice cleanse in their life; or an indulgent DIY face mask that they stumbled upon.

To give you a better idea of what we mean, we believe our ideal reader prefers to spend her weekends in Downward Dog, while catching up with a girlfriend over a Latte and sporting Lululemon or Lorna Jane in place of Louis Vuitton. More than ever, we believe women crave “me time”, meaningful relationships and the opportunity to connect with their mind, body and soul.

After recognizing the opportunity to jump on the bandwagon and even inspire more women to live their best life, we decided to create an online space that provides interesting, informative and well-researched articles on everything from the latest fitness gadgets to the best at-home facial cleansing device to the coolest yoga retreats on the planet.

We’ll admit, we’re super obsessed with tracking the latest fashion trends and trying out anything new like an organic juice bar or a ballet-inspired barre class. And we equally love when we discover a life-changing beauty treatment, a recipe for a delicious, gluten-free dessert or an inspiring podcast.

To ensure our content is relevant, newsworthy, timely and factual, we conduct interviews with leading industry experts; cite the latest studies from scientific journals and share anecdotal stories from real-life women. As professional journalists, we believe it’s our job to eliminate the fluff and get straight to the facts.

With so much information and misinformation out there, we know it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. Therefore, we do our best to give you content that’s relevant and meaningful to you and your life. Our goal is to leave you feeling empowered, inspired and totally Zen.

In addition to providing interesting and inspiring articles, we also strive to create a sense of community and sisterhood among our readers. We believe it’s important to foster conversations on real-life issues as a way to support and empower one another. When we share our stories and allow ourselves to be open and vulnerable we are able to see that we are much more alike than not.

Although we know that beauty stems from the inside, we also believe in taking good care of ourselves. As a wellness-inspired magazine, we strongly feel that when we eat well, exercise regularly — and on occasion— trade in our sweats for stilettos, we have the energy, confidence, strength and stamina to accomplish so much more.

We sincerely hope that you enjoy our online publication. If you ever have any questions, comments or concerns, please feel free to contact us. We’d love to hear from you!

Wishing you an abundance of health & happiness

Sincerely,

The DBHH Editorial Team
